Post PRA Genetic test
Ok, I may be behind the times but I just found out they can do a PRA test with a cheek swab.
It is only $40 for the test.

Has anyone else done this? If there a high chance of false postives?
I ordered some tests for my dogs but just wanted to see what everyone else thought about it.
Thanks, Kristy

Post Re: PRA Genetic test
The PRA test is... iffy... still. They haven't quite perfected it yet. But I still do mine because I can afford to do it and I like to do it. I can tell you that the ONLY reason I do it is because it's becoming more well known and people look for it, despite the fact that it's not quite perfected yet.

Plus it's a one time test, as opposed to CERF and patellas where you have to return every 2 years or so.

I do believe I've done at least two polls in the past related to this topic. You might want to check them out. Interesting results! PRA Testing was in the polling subject if you want to dig them up!

I agree, and I take every result with a grain of salt. The main reasoning for a lot of breeders to do the test unfortunately is to make yourself look better, I personally wont do the test until it becomes more accurate, I wont waste my money on a false result. I would be more than happy to fund research, but I don't agree with offering a test that is known to be inaccurate.

An email from Sue at Optigen (I asked why they don't offer the test)

Quote:
Dear Megan,

You are correct---OptiGen does not perform the CORD1 test. We have made the decision to not offer this test because we feel that there is more to be understood in this story than is currently the case. The correlation between CORD1 disease and genotype is not as strong as with the DNA tests OptiGen currently offers---where essentially a 1:1 correlation/predictability occurs. The researchers involved in the CORD1 are open about the need for further work. I am confident that they will continue to study and refine the testing for the dachshund PRA so that it is more useful.

Best regards,
Sue PK
